How to find an earlier driving test time

Practical ways to get a test date sooner than the first free time you see, from cancellations to choosing the right test centres.

You open Trafikverket's booking page and the first free time is months away. That does not mean you have to wait months. Test times are released all the time. The trick is to be there when it happens.

Why earlier times appear

Every day people cancel or move their tests: they get ill, they are not ready, they find a better time somewhere else. Those times go straight back into the booking system, at any hour of the day. Trafikverket also adds new times when it has more examiners available.

These times are usually taken within minutes. Whoever sees them first gets them.

1. Search more than one test centre

The nearest test centre is often the busiest. Look at a map and list every centre you could realistically get to, even if it takes an hour. A test in a smaller town a few weeks from now beats a test at home in four months.

2. Be flexible about days and times

The more days and times you can say yes to, the more chances you get. If you can take a weekday off, your options grow a lot.

3. Keep your current booking

If you already have a test booked, keep it as a safety net while you look for an earlier one. Trafikverket only lets you hold one booking per test, so when a better time shows up you move (rebook) your test to it on Trafikverket's site instead of booking a second one. Do it in good time: changes close to the test can cost a fee.

4. Check often, at different times of day

Cancellations come in at random moments. People who find earlier times usually checked many times a day, early mornings and late evenings included. It works, but it is tiring.

5. Let something check for you

Instead of refreshing the page yourself, use a service that watches for you:

  1. Sign in with BankID, the same login Trafikverket uses.
  2. Choose your test, language, car, dates and up to four test centres.
  3. Get an email or a browser notification the moment a matching time opens up.
  4. Reserve and book it yourself. Nothing is booked without your click.

That is exactly what Drive in Sweden does. We check Trafikverket every five minutes, day and night, and you decide what to book. It costs 150 kr for 30 days, with no subscription.

6. Be ready to act fast

When a notification comes, minutes matter:

  • Keep BankID ready on your phone.
  • Decide beforehand which days and centres you would say yes to.
  • Turn on notifications on the phone you carry with you.

In short

Search wide, be flexible, keep your current booking, and either check very often or let a service do it. Most people who get an earlier test do it by catching a cancellation, not by waiting for the queue.
