The theory test, kunskapsprov, checks that you know the traffic rules and understand risks on the road. Many people find it harder than they expect, because the questions are about judgement, not just memorised rules. Here is how to get through it.
How the test works
- You take it on a computer at one of Trafikverket's test centres.
- The questions are multiple choice, often with a picture or a short film of a traffic situation.
- It is offered in several languages besides Swedish, including English. You choose the language when you book.
- You get your result straight away.
Trafikverket publishes the current number of questions, the time limit and the pass mark. Look them up before the test so there are no surprises on the day.
What the questions are about
The questions cover much more than road signs:
- Traffic rules: right of way, speed limits, overtaking, parking.
- Risk awareness: reading situations, children, cyclists, weather and darkness.
- The driver: alcohol, drugs, tiredness, distraction from the phone.
- The vehicle: safety equipment, loading and maintenance.
- Environment: fuel-saving driving.
Many questions describe a situation and ask what is the safest thing to do. When two answers look right, the one with the bigger safety margin is usually correct.
How to study
- Start with the theory book, or an app from a driving school, in the language you will take the test in. Read it properly once before drilling questions.
- Practise questions every day. Short, regular sessions work better than one long one. Our sister app Drive Test has exam-style questions with explanations, an AI tutor and progress stats (read more).
- Learn from your mistakes. For every wrong answer, find out why the right answer is right.
- Take full practice tests under time pressure in the last week or two.
- Connect it to real driving. When you practise driving, talk through the rules you meet.
If you study in English, learn the key Swedish words too: road signs and test material use them, and they help on the driving test.
On the test day
- Bring a valid ID document. Without it you cannot take the test.
- Arrive in good time; you may have your photo taken for the licence.
- Read every question to the end. Words like always, never and only matter.
- Do not get stuck: skip a hard question and come back to it if you can.
If you do not pass
It happens to many people. Look at which areas you lost points in, practise those, and book a new test. Once you pass one of the two tests, you have a limited time to pass the other, so plan your driving test date with that in mind.
Need a driving test date soon after your theory test? Drive in Sweden watches Trafikverket for free times at up to four test centres and tells you the moment one opens up.
